Margalla Hills Twin Tunnels Approved – Haripur to Islamabad in Just 15 Minutes
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has finally approved the Margalla Hills Twin Tunnels Project, one of the biggest development plans in the region. These twin tunnels will connect Haripur and Khanpur directly to Islamabad, making travel faster, easier, and safer for everyone.
Travel Time Cut Down to Just 10–15 Minutes
Right now, it takes a long time to travel from Haripur to Islamabad. But after this project is done, the distance will be only 8 kilometers, and the trip will take just 10 to 15 minutes!
This will be a huge relief for daily travelers, students, and the business community who move between the two cities every day.
When Will the Tunnels Be Ready?
Construction of the Margalla Hills tunnels will start in December 2025 and is expected to finish by December 25, 2028.
The KP government says these tunnels will be built with international standards — with bright lighting, safety systems, and ventilation to make traveling through them comfortable and secure.
Connecting Islamabad to Hazara Motorway (M-15)
The new tunnels will connect Islamabad’s Sector D-12 directly to the Hazara Motorway (M-15). This means people from northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be able to reach Islamabad much faster.
Experts believe this project will boost tourism, trade, and local business, creating more jobs and helping Pakistan’s economy grow.
Built Under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
The Margalla Hills Twin Tunnel Project will be built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The KP government has already set aside Rs. 1 billion for the first year in its 2025 Annual Development Program (ADP).
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) will also help by giving technical support and guidance during construction.
A Plan 20 Years in the Making
According to the Hazara Development Authority (HDA), this project has been discussed for almost 20 years, but it was delayed many times because of funding problems and government changes.
Now, the KP government says it is fully committed to finishing the project this time — without any more delays.
Ready to Complete – With or Without Federal Help
Even though help from the federal government would make things easier, the KP government has said it will finish the tunnels even if it has to do it alone.
Recent talks with federal officials have been positive, giving people hope that this project will be completed by 2028. When done, the Margalla Hills Twin Tunnels will completely change the way people travel between Haripur and Islamabad, making it quicker, safer, and much more enjoyable.
